What an amazing day.
That’s the only way I can describe last Sunday, when 150,000 people came out to cheer and welcome the iconicOlympic Torch to Havering.
It passed through Romford Market Place, Hornchurch town centre and into Rainham less than a week before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
I cannot praise the reception it received from Havering’s residents and visitors enough. The size of the crowds was more than we could have ever hoped for and it was the perfect demonstration of the great community spirit in the borough.
I was also pleased to see the Havering 2012 Ambassadors, running alongside the Torch procession, helping to ensure it had a smooth transition through the borough.
It was a particular honour to welcome the Chinese pianist, Lang Lang, to the borough and I hope he enjoyed the experience.
From where I was stood on the stage in Hornchurch Green it really did look as though the whole town had come out to see the Torch.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make it such a special day for the entire borough to enjoy. I can’t wait for the Games to begin. I hope you all enjoy what will truly be a wonderful occasion for us all to remember.
